COVID-19 Update May 13, 2020
As we approach the 2020 pool season, we are eagerly awaiting direction from our state on whether pools will be allowed to open this summer.
Currently, Coloradoans are under a "Safer At Home" order, which does not allow for gatherings of more than 10 people at a time. While the government awaits the data on how successful the Safer At Home phase is, swimming pools are still without clear direction on opening in 2020.
We spoke with the El Paso County Department of Environmental Health on Wednesday, May 6, and were told that as of that date, "under the Safer At Home order, pools are ordered not to open," and since then, they have clarified that pools must remain closed until June 1.
Although the CDC has stated there is not currently any indication that COVID can be spread through properly treated pool water, it does spread from person-to-person, especially where people gather. On a slow day, we can average 50-75 people, and on a busy day, we can easily see over 200 people pass through our facility.
Some pools have already announced closure for the entire season, while others have announced a delayed opening date, depending on what the state decides. The PPYMCA will not even begin filling their pools until late May in hopes of having direction before putting the expense into opening.
The Swimmery is taking a similar approach. We have started pool clean up, we have gotten the water turned back on for the season, and we are staffed with lifeguards for the summer, but we are awaiting direction before we fill and heat the pool.
We have also heard from many of our members that they will be remaining in full quarantine a bit longer until there is more data on how the phased reopening of the state is going.
In the event that we are unable to open this summer, for those of you who have already purchased memberships or deposits, we will be happy to apply those to the 2021 pool season.
Please stay tuned for further updates, and in the meantime, we are thinking of you and wishing you health, safety, and hope during these uncertain times.
